Program notes
 
"Drive" is a fast-paced piece aimed at evoking the feeling of driving through a cityscape. In this 6-minute long work, "Drive" brings to life the feeling of driving past skyscrapers on the highway, fast turns in downtown, and even the grinding halt of rush hour traffic. The piece is governed by a single 4-note motif that serves as a catalyst for melodic lines which are passed around the ensemble, presented through augmentation, diminution, and transposition. To reflect the ever-changing scenery of driving through a cityscape, melodies are often short, fragmented, and quickly passed between different groups of instruments. Throughout the piece, the orchestration rapidly changes from bright, and metallic brass/percussion sounds representing headlights and cars horns wizzing by, to warm and sonorous sounds representing the open road ahead.

    Dr. Alex C. Ehredt is an award-winning composer, saxophonist, and music educator known for his captivating and approachable music that blends a contemporary classical style with rock, pop, and jazz influences. With a deep-rooted passion for social issues, mental health, and urban landscapes, his compositions resonate with every listener on a profound level.

     

    Currently an Adjunct Professor of Music at the University of Tampa and Saint Leo University, Dr. Ehredt fosters an inclusive environment and highlights diversity in music through his teaching. He has also held roles as a music theory teaching assistant at the University of Redlands and music theory instructor for the University of Tampa summer music camps.

     

    As a composer, Dr. Ehredt has received accolades such as the James E. Croft Grant for Young and Emerging Composers from the Atlantic Coast Conference Band Directors Association for his Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble. His notable compositions include Ouroboros, commissioned for the unveiling concert of the University of Tampa's "Ars Sonora" bell tower, and Assimilation, which explores personal adaptation to major life changes.

     

    Dr. Ehredt’s saxophone skills shine as the baritone saxophonist of the University of Tampa Faculty Saxophone Quartet and as a substitute member of the Florida Wind Band. His performances and compositions have been featured at renowned events and festivals, including the 2018 International Trombone Festival.

     

    Dr. Ehredt holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Master of Music degree in Composition from the University of Redlands, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from The University of Tampa. Dr. Alex C. Ehredt continues to captivate audiences with his compelling compositions, virtuosic saxophone performances, and dedication to music education, all while promoting diversity and inclusivity within the world of music.
