Impulse Momentum, Concerto for Wind Orchestra and Percussion by Mexican-Hungarian composer Aurés Moussong is our Composition of the Week.
Impulse Momentum was premiered on May 6, 2023, in Strasbourg, France, by the Wind Ensemble of the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR) conducted by Nicolas Walle.
That same year, the work was named one of three finalists in the Emerging Composers Category of WASBE’s 4th International Composition Contest, presented during the organization’s Regional Conference in Lençóis Paulista, Brazil (July 6–8, 2023).
“Impulse Momentum – Concerto for Wind Orchestra and Percussion explores the vast expressive, energetic, and coloristic possibilities of the wind orchestra and percussion ensemble. The work is conceived as a concerto of force in motion, driven by an almost volcanic energy, in which musical materials are continuously accumulated, transformed, and projected. Its highly demanding writing places every section of the ensemble in the foreground at different moments, highlighting distinctive instrumental groups and requiring a high degree of virtuosity, precision, and coordination from all performers. Throughout the piece, different musical parameters emerge from this underlying field of intense energy: the exploration of extreme registers, rapid dynamic shifts, dense accumulations of sound, and eruptive sonic masses. These elements interact in complex yet highly coordinated ways, generating a continuous tension between control and release. The form unfolds through contrasting sound spaces. At times, the music demands the precision of a rhythmic mechanism in which every line is essential to the functioning of the whole; at others, it expands into broader textures and layered sonorities. The percussion part contributes a coloristic dimension of equal significance, while also acting as a catalyst for transformation within the ensemble.” Program notes by Aurés Moussong
Impulse Momentum has a duration of 13 minutes, it is scored for standard wind orchestra setting, including contrabass-clarinet, double bassoon, soprano saxophone as well as 4 percussion parts.
Aurés Moussong earned his master’s degree from the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and the Universität der Künste Berlin through the Erasmus program. He later completed a two-year postgraduate specialization in composition with Daniel D’Adamo at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, France. Recently, he studied composition with Swiss composer Dieter Ammann at the Hochschule Luzern – Musik.
Some of his works have been recognized with international awards, including the Ibermúsicas 2021 Prize, the Second Prize at the CHINA-CEEC Chamber Music Academies Competition in Hangzhou, China, and First Prizes at the Egidio Carella Composition Competition in Italy and the WoCe Competition organized by the Hungarian Composers Association. His work Dialogue à quatre premiered at the 2023 Musica Festival in Strasbourg, and he was a finalist at the Basel Composition Competition with Macabre Carnaval.
He is currently based in Lyon, France.
