Jennifer Jolley’s tone poem The eyes of the world are upon you is our composition of the week.

The piece’s title is taken from Alejandra Garza’s article appeared on “Behind the Tower”, a collective work of eleven graduate students and one History professor at The University of Texas, Austin, a research project to produce a public history of the mass shooting occurred in August 1st, 1966, being the first campus mass shooting in the history of the USA.

The music is programmatic, poignant and contemplative. It is intended to be a “celebration of life: to those who died that day, but also to those who survived”.

The eyes of the world are upon you was commissioned by the Alpha Tau chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi for the University of Texas at Austin Wind Ensemble and Jerry Junkin.

The first performance took place on March 5, 2017.

Written for standard wind ensemble setting, it requires solid solo playing in the woodwind section (English-horn, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon…). Two sirens, high and low, are also necessary. The work has a duration of 12 minutes. The music is on rental at the composer’s website.
