Bull’s-eye by American composer Viet Cuong is our Composition of the Week.


Bull’s-eye was written in 2019 after a commission by a consortium of ten universities and organizations led by Nils Landsberg and the University of Kansas.


The work is orchestrated for chamber winds and uses the following instrumentation:


piccolo, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone quartet, trumpet, horn, piano and 2 percussions.

Bull’s-eye has a duration of 11 minutes and it is published by Viet Cuong Music.


Other works for Wind Ensemble by Viet Cuong include Sound and Smoke (2011, winner of the 2012 Walter Beeler Memorial Prize), Moth (2013) and Re(new)al (2019) a concerto for percussion quartet and wind ensemble.


Viet Cuong is currently the 2020 Early Career Musician-in-Residence at the Dumbarton Oaks, he was recently appointed the California Symphony’s 2020-2023 Young American Composer-in-Residence.


He holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music (AD), Princeton University (MFA), and Peabody Conservatory (BM/MM)
